A month before we were meant to leave our independently organised elective was cancelled. We called Work the World and they arranged electives in our chosen fields around our flight dates.

If I were to use one word to sum up my time in Sri Lanka it would be ‘amazing’. It is an experience full of fabulous memories which will stay with me forever.

I rotated around the general medical, paediatric and accident & emergency departments. This gave me the opportunity to see diseases that you seldom see, or have only ever heard about.

The highlight of my placement was going to an outreach clinic, then having king coconuts with the registrars on the side of the road on the way back.

Many patients presented late, so I saw fairly advanced and destructive tumours
