The first 48 hours
A huge part of the service we offer is the on-the-ground support our in-country teams provide. We take care of everything from the moment you land to the moment you leave.

Here’s what the first couple of days look like.
When you arrive at the airport, we’ll be there waiting for you. From there, we travel with you to the Work the World house, where you’ll meet the rest of the team and the people you’ll be living with. After a quick welcome briefing, you’ll have the chance to settle in and start adjusting to your new home before the evening welcome meal with your new housemates.
The following day, we’ll take you out and about on a city orientation. We’ll show you all the best places to eat (and drink), get you sorted out with your own local phone number, and give you the low-down on everything interesting and useful about the area.
After lunch at one of our favourite restaurants, it’s time to visit your hospital. We’ll introduce you to your supervisors and take you on a tour of the departments. Your actual placement doesn’t start until the following day, but we find that it’s nice to get a feel for the new clinical setting beforehand.
Then, it’s back to the house for dinner and to get ready for the start of your clinical placement the next day.

Regardless of which destination you choose, the way we work and the structure of the teams is always the same.
So, Who are ‘the teams', exactly?
All of our houses come equipped with an in-country team.
We make a point of hiring our in-country teams from the local community. They know the locale better than anyone, they fluently speak both English and the local language, and they’re a part of the community. From an immersion and integration point of view, they are invaluble.
Each team has a Programme Manager, an Assistant Programme Manager, a chef, a housekeeper and a language teacher.
Your PM and APM
The Programme Manager (PM) and the Assistant Programme Manager (APM) are responsible for making sure your experience overseas meets your expectations.
The true backbones of the production were the PM and APM. I don’t think you’ll find people willing to go as above and beyond anywhere else. Having close relationships with our partner hospitals, the duo organise your placement based on the clinical interest conversations you’ll have had with our UK team. This all happens before you arrive, and you can read more about how that works, here.
The PM and APM are based out of their office in the Work the World house and are always around should you need them.
One of the key parts of their job is to keep up to date with your clinical experience, making sure everything is as you imagined it. They’ll come and visit you in hospital, stay in touch with your supervisors and, most importantly, talk to you throughout the whole duration of your placement.
The team also have an impressive amount of local and national knowledge. They can give you information about what to do in the evenings after placement, over the weekends, or even after your time with us if you’re planning on travelling.
Every Work the World team has an in-house chef. They have broad-ranging backgrounds—some have cooked in luxury hotels, some have won baking championships, some have created dishes for famous local restaurants.

Our chefs have broad culinary repertoires and will cook both local specialities and more familiar Western dishes. If you’re vegetarian, pescetarian, vegan, gluten intolerant, lactose intolerant, or you’re just not into spicy food, you’ll be pleased to know that we can cater to all dietary requirements.
You’ll also have the chance to learn how to cook local specialities with your chef. You’ll get a hands-on, step by step lesson through one of their signature dishes. Naturally, our chefs are protective over their recipes, so if you take it home with you make sure whoever eats it knows who created it!
The housekeeper is there to make sure your living spaces are kept fresh. They’re responsible for cleaning all areas including the dining areas, bathrooms, bedrooms and other common areas. They’re a friendly face you’ll come to know well.
Your Language Teacher
The language teacher comes over to the house twice per-week. They’ll help get you up to speed with both everyday words and phrases, and clinical terminologies specific to your discipline and the departments you’ll be working in. They’re a huge help when it comes to getting the most from both the clinical and cultural aspects of your experience.
Aside from the job descriptions, our teams are like families. They’re warm, welcoming, and invested in you having the time of your life.
