Midwifery Internships

Midwifery in Arequipa is entirely different to what you’re used to back home. Some things challenge even the most fundamental understandings you have about best practice. For example, there's no pain relief for women in labor, the vast majority of mothers don’t receive postnatal care, and caesareans are more common than not. To make matters more challenging, preeclampsia and premature births are common as a result of the stresses of living in such poor conditions.

Dentistry Internship, Peru (Arequipa)

Dentistry Internships

For the most part, the dental team in Arequipa perform remedial care. That said, you will see how preventative procedures are becoming more common. These clinics play a key role in delivering the government’s free dental care program. The program helps low income patients by offering an all-inclusive service for the local community. You’ll encounter common, but severe cases — cavities, misaligned teeth, and decay. Cavities and decay are in large part attributable to a lack of education around oral hygiene and the high-sugar diet local people tend towards. There is also a mobile clinic you can get involved with. You’ll visit local schools, providing education and basic treatments to children.
