Research, set-up & implementation

The safety of your students is a top priority at every level, from researching destinations and setting-up programs, to implementing the placements themselves.

Below, you can read about some of the specific measures we take based on our extensive experience in the developing world.

Local Team

We have locally-hired, highly trained teams in each of our programs. In each program we have a management team, comprising a Program Manager and an Assistant Program Manager. These teams have extensive experience overseeing student safety. The team are always available and able to solve issues in the rare instances that they arise.

Accommodation

Work the World houses are private and for the use of Work the World students only.

No one may enter the house other than Work the World students and staff. For peace of mind, all Work the World houses have secure grounds, and security teams on duty where required. These are sometimes supplemented by external overnight security provisions if necessary. The security teams also keep logs of every student entering and leaving the house.

In the hospital

Your students have total support in our partner hospitals.

We keep detailed records of which departments students are in and when they are there. We know where all students are at all times. Our staff also make regular visits to the students on placement to ensure they are getting the most out of their internship.

Our teams have close relationships with senior hospital staff including hospital directors. This allows them to directly address any concerns your students may have and take effective steps to rectify issues as they arise.

Please note that, where required, our hospital placements have the accreditation and backing of local Ministries of Health.

Malpractice Cover

Students need to have medical malpractice cover while they’re in our partner hospitals, just as they do back home. The students needs to (independently) arrange their own medical malpractice cover, however we can assist with this if required.

The second layer of protection is the indemnification that our partner hospitals provide. Supervisors in our partner hospitals are legally responsible for the clinical actions of any students we send. As such, the hospitals indemnify all parties — the supervisors and the students themselves.

It’s important to note here that the student is our customer, not your school — your school has no legal obligation. Responsibility for malpractice insurance lies exclusively with the student and our partner hospital.

Health insurance

In order to travel with us, every student needs to independently arrange travel/health insurance. They are welcome to do this through any provider they choose, but we are able to recommend our preferred providers should they need advice. It is also important the insurer knows the nature of the trip to ensure adequate cover, but again we can consult with your student in advance of purchase.

Crisis Management protocol

Our approach to crisis management is multi-layered. Our in-country teams are the first layer, and immediately responsible for resolving any issues that arise. They are highly trained and are skilled and experienced, with every resource at their disposal to swiftly resolve unexpected situations.

In the rare event that a situation needs to be escalated, our UK-based Head Office Crisis Management Team will take the lead, overseen by our experienced Operations Director.

This team are readily available and are all thoroughly prepared to manage crises of any nature. In fact, all key staff in our organization are highly trained in crisis management, and we ensure crisis management refresher training takes place at regular intervals.

We have comprehensive documented protocols that cover any and every possible situation. To find out more, please contact us on +1 (617) 315 1412 or email us via [email protected]

Terms and conditions

We have transparent and clear guidelines on areas of responsibility of ours and the students. These are always available in clear view on our website, and you can read them in full here.
