While you’re overseas, your safety and security are our primary concerns.

We want you to relax and enjoy the experience in the knowledge that we’ve covered all the bases.

Below, you can read about what we do to make sure you have a safe trip, and about actions you can personally take to stay safe overseas.

Before You Travel

You will have regular contact with our expert team long before your trip. You will receive detailed information about your travel destination and the hospital in which you’ll undertake your placement.

We will fully prepare you for all aspects of your trip. This preparation will give you the confidence you need to feel safe and secure in unfamiliar surroundings.

During this process, you’ll have ample time to discuss any concerns and raise questions.

We have prepared thousands of people for internships like this, so you can rest assured our experts have all the answers.

Arrival and departure

When you land at your destination airport, a member of Work the World staff will be there to meet you. They will then take you to your accommodation (more on that below).

When it’s time for you to go home, we make sure you get back to the airport safely too.

Safe destinations

We develop internships only in destinations that are safe for travel.

All countries in which we operate meet our own strict internal criteria, focused on safety and stability.

We also stay up to date with travel information directly from the US State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Of course, we have a comprehensive list of protocols and procedures that ensure your safety, regardless of the circumstances.

Accommodation

The Work the World houses are renowned for being spacious, sociable and comfortable. But they are also known for their safety and security.

The houses are shared, but private and accessible only by students undertaking a Work the World internship. They are located in safe (carefully vetted) neighbourhoods.

The properties are secure. Each house has a 24-hour security team, and keep records of who comes and goes, day and night.

In-country teamS

Each of our destinations has a locally-hired, in-country team.

They will take you through comprehensive briefings and orientations when you arrive.

Your in-country team are there to support you throughout your placement. Based in the Work the World house, they are available for you 24/7 for the duration of your placement.

Our teams are trained to handle emergency situations, in the extremely unlikely event that one should arise.

You also have access to a 24/7 emergency phone line that a member of our UK team will answer.

In the hospital

The support our in-country teams offer extends into your placement hospital too.

The team has strong relationships with healthcare professionals in all our partner hospitals — from junior members of staff to hospital directors.

You are, ultimately, responsible for yourself in the hospital.

However, our staff have a level of trust within our partner hospitals that allow them to step in to resolve issues, rare as they may be.
