What Does a Typical Day on a Work the World Placement Look Like?

Wake up somewhere totally new

You’ll begin the day waking up in the Work the World house, then head downstairs for breakfast with your housemates.

The catering team in the Work the World house prepare a delicious breakfast each morning to get you ready for a day on placement.

Chats over breakfast will flow easily, and you’ll quickly realise that living with like-minded peers makes an overseas healthcare placement a truly shared experience.

Every day on a Work the World placement has the same basic structure, but when it comes to clinical experience, no two days will be the same.

Head to Placement With your housemates

After breakfast, you'll travel to your placement hospital, often with your housemates if they’re in the same placement hospital as you.

You'll travel by local public transport or taxi (depending on availability and preference), and all routes will be explained to you during your initial city tour with the Work the World in-country team.

This is a commute unlike any you’re used to — bustling streets, attention-grabbing sights and sounds, and a new pace of life that will quickly start to feel familiar.

Step Into a Healthcare Setting That Will Change the Way You See Healthcare Forever

Your placement forms the core of your day. You’ll start in the mornings at around 8am (this will vary by discipline and destination), and you'll typically finish in the early afternoon. You can choose to work longer shifts if you want more experience (including night shifts), but this is entirely optional.

But what might you experience in those hours?

  • See conditions and cases rarely encountered back home
  • Experience how care is delivered with limited resources
  • Rotate through different departments depending on your interests

It’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after you return home — and makes you stand out professionally. Every moment challenges your existing perspectives and builds your confidence.

Your afternoons and evenings are yours to explore

After placement, you can head back to the Work the World house. From there, your afternoons are yours to do as you please. You and your housemates might choose to explore the city, try out new restaurants, explore a local craft market, tick off some tourist sites, head to a bar, unwind by the pool, or watch a film.

Your team at the Work the World house will give you insider tips on local hotspots, so you can make the most out of your free time during the week after placement finishes.

Use your weekends to go further afield

Your clinical placement runs Monday to Friday. Outside of those hours, your time is your own, and there’s no shortage of ways to spend it.

Your housemates will quickly become friends, and the travel experiences you have alongside your clinical placement can be just as formative as the clinical ones.

Stunning destinations across Asia and Africa:

  • Beaches, mountains, and rainforests
  • Iconic landmarks and hidden temples
  • Adventures like paragliding, trekking, safari and swimming with whale sharks

This is where your placement becomes something much bigger than the clinical experience.
