Argentina Mendoza
Intensive Spanish Course
Having a second language can really help you in your healthcare profession. We have developed a unique opportunity to study Spanish whilst taking part in your placement, using the language to enhance your time in the hospital and also introduce you to the more social culture and customs of Mendoza.
Although some supervisors do speak English to a reasonable level, having Spanish language skills will noticeably increase your ability to understand and converse with both staff and patients at your placement. It will help you understand patient notes and also show your team that you are proactive and want to learn. This in turn will open the doors to more patient interaction.
Our unique course is designed to complement your placement, building on your current level and giving you the most useful and relevant medical Spanish. You will also enjoy a series of trips and practical exercises designed to teach, increase your confidence and provide some fun!
Of course we understand that language is a very fluid thing; you may feel that you have never attained any higher than a beginner's level of Spanish, or you may have been proficient in the past but believe you are likely to be slightly "rusty" when you arrive in Argentina. Alternatively you may be a confident Spanish speaker, but just want to concentrate on learning some specific healthcare-related vocabulary or understand the quirks of Mendozan Spanish. Whatever your reason, signing up is the best introduction to your new host country and the perfect way to prepare for your placement.
Course content
Our specialist Spanish teachers run the course at the Work the World house. In groups of up to four people you will spend the week covering all the important aspects of the language that we feel are relevant to you, including placement jargon, key phrases for travel and tourism, and Argentina-specific pronunciation and slang.
Our course format is a unique and creative blend of formal teaching and fun cultural activities! In the morning, you will be concentrating on the theory - with classroom lessons on grammar and vocabulary, which take you up to lunch. After lunch you will join our Assistant Program Manager Martin, to use your Spanish in a variety of exciting scenarios.
The afternoon cultural trips are a fantastic way in which to learn and develop confidence quickly, as well as helping you to get to know the area. Depending on availability, you will be joining in with cookery classes, learning how to dance the tango, and traveling out to the wine-growing regions or local eateries to immerse yourself in local traditions.
When the classes are done for the day it is back to the house for dinner, followed by free time - where you can reflect on the Spanish you have picked up whilst relaxing on the roof terrace, or head back out into the town center to practice with the locals!

I chose Mendoza for a part of my eight-week medical elective, and boy am I glad I did; it has got to be one of the highlights of my life thus far.

I accompanied my co-worker Maxi to his other part-time job at a clinic on the north side of town. He ended up being my closest friend in MDZ, and on top of that visit, we also spent some nights out together downtown and he wrote me a letter of recommendation (in Spanish, of course) upon leaving.

I would hands down recommend Mendoza as an elective placement choice. It is such an incredible city, and the elective opportunities there were incredible. I never would have had the opportunity to work with patients the way I did if I had done my internship at home.
