Laila Braeckevelt

Laila is a third-year nursing student. She spent eight weeks doing a nursing internship in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Even before starting nursing school, I knew I wanted to do a nursing placement abroad. I was keen to expand my knowledge, improve my English and understand a different culture, healthcare system, and other people’s points of view. 

I knew that I wanted to go away with Work the World, it was important I had support and someone to talk to if I needed it. I chose Nepal because I had no understanding of their healthcare system. 

I didn’t expect Nepal to be as developed as it was, of course, it’s not as developed as many other countries. I spent time in ED and Pediatrics. I enjoyed spending time with the local hospital teams and building a good relationship with my supervisors.

Speaking with local Nepali folk as well as the Nepali Work the World staff really made me understand the culture. 

Living in the Work the World house made the trip. I could reflect on my experiences in the hospital, both good and bad, and knowing that others knew what I was feeling really helped. 

Weekend trips were incredible. Chitwan National Park was my highlight. I saw many animals and enjoyed nature and the pretty sunsets. 

The lakeside city of Pokhara was stunning, my favourite place in Nepal. 

Bandipur is the perfect destination if you want to enjoy nature and the Nepali peace. 

The benefits of an overseas placement for me personally were that I got the chance to improve my English, my knowledge, and my mindset, and I met people from all over the world. 

I recommend taking an overseas healthcare placement in Nepal to anyone - just go for it! It’s guaranteed to be the best time of your life. It’s a great combination of placement, expanding medical knowledge and enjoying the beautiful country that is Nepal! 

This experience has changed my mindset and will make me an even better nurse.
